Once a zine outgrows the single folded sheet, the natural next step is the saddle-stitch booklet: sheets printed on both sides, stacked, folded in half, and stapled through the spine. It's how most photocopied zines, church bulletins, and small magazines are made. The layout maths is the only hard part — and that part is automated.

Pick a page count that folds

Every sheet in a saddle-stitched booklet carries four of your pages (two per side), so your total must be a multiple of 4 — 8, 12, 16, 20 and so on. Not there? No problem: blank pages get added at the end, which zine-makers traditionally use for notes, colophons, or deliberate breathing room. Let imposition arrange the pages

In a folded booklet, the outermost sheet holds the first and last pages: for a 12-page zine, sheet one prints pages 12 and 1 on its front, 2 and 11 on its back. Working that out by hand for every sheet — and getting it right again after every edit — is miserable. Instead, keep your PDF in plain reading order and drop it into the free zine maker. Print double-sided — after one test sheet

Booklet printing fails most often at the duplex step: printers flip paper on the long or the short edge, and the wrong guess turns every back page upside down. Fold, staple, done

Stack the printed sheets in order, fold the whole stack in half, and staple twice along the crease. A long-arm stapler is the proper tool; the zine tradition is to open a regular stapler flat, punch through into a cork board or eraser, and bend the legs closed by hand. Crease hard with the back of a spoon and trim the open edge if the inner pages creep out.
