Canva is a great place to design a zine — and a terrible place to print one. It happily lets you lay out eight beautiful pages, but it has no idea that page 5 needs to print upside down in the top-left corner of the sheet for your folds to work. That step is called imposition, Canva doesn't do it, and it's the reason most first zines come out of the printer scrambled. Here's the workflow that works, start to finish.

Step 1 — Set up the right page size in Canva

Create a design with custom size, one Canva page per zine page, in normal reading order (page 1 is your cover). For the classic 8-page one-sheet zine:

• Printing on A4: design each page at A7 — 74 × 105 mm
• Printing on US Letter: design each page at 4.25 × 5.5 in

Exact size matters less than proportions — the imposition step scales pages to fit their panel — but designing at final size keeps your text legible. Body text below 10pt gets rough after folding.

Step 2 — Design in reading order, ignore the fold

This is the liberating part: do not try to arrange pages the way they'll sit on the printed sheet. Design page 1, then 2, then 3, exactly as a reader will flip through them. Keep important content away from the page edges (a 5 mm margin is plenty) since folding by hand is never laser-precise.

Step 3 — Export as PDF Print

Go to Share → Download → PDF Print and download all pages as a single PDF. Choose PDF Print rather than PDF Standard — it exports at 300 DPI, which is what paper needs. Skip crop marks and bleed; the imposition tool handles placement.

Step 4 — Impose the PDF (the step Canva can't do)

Step 5 — Print and fold

Print the downloaded sheet at 100% scale ("actual size", never "fit to page"). The 8-page zine prints single-sided: three folds, one cut along the marked red line, and it pops into a booklet. For stapled booklets, print double-sided — and run the tool's one-sheet printer calibration first, so your back pages don't come out upside down.
